The Ballarat Historical Society Inc. began in 1933 although material has been collected from as early as a century ago by a parent society. The collection was housed at the Barkly Street Museum until 1981 when it was transferred to the Gold Museum for permanent storage and display.

Meetings of the Ballarat Historical Society are held monthly (except January) at the Gold Museum in Bradshaw Street, at 7:30 pm. Generally there is a speaker at each meeting although sometimes meetings take the form of visits to historical sites. These have included the Old Cemetery, Fire Station, Synagogue, Bailey's Mansion, Observatory, Airport, Hymettus Cottage and Garden, St. Patrick's College and Montrose Cottage.

The Society's newsletter, Ballaarat Remembers (ISSN 1320-4327), is produced bi-monthly and contains information about the meetings, and stories about Ballarat's history written by members of the Community.

The Society preserves items of historical importance, encourages people to research Ballarat's history and to talk about it. Several plaques have been erected by the Ballarat Historical Society including the sculpture outside the Visitor Information Centre.
